The Importance of Product Quality
by Sam Malhotra - He is a dynamic, results-oriented executive with a strong track record of performance in turnaround and high-paced organizations.
Quality of the product is one of the most important characteristics that determine demand for the product and is of strategic importance for the economic health of companies as well as countries.
In particular, quality affects a firm in the following ways.
1. Improved profitability:
Improved quality results in improved profitability due to potential increase in market share as well as cost savings. The cost savings are a result of lower rework and scrap costs, less wastage and lower warranty costs. The increase in market share is a result of higher volume in sales. People are willing to pay higher prices for better quality and hence it improves the profitability of the company.
2. Image and reputation of the company:
Quality products not only promote the products but also the company. An organization can expect its reputation for quality – good or bad – to follow it. Based on quality, people develop certain perceptions about the firm’s new products, employment practices, and concerns for consumers.
3. Product liability:
A defective item which causes damage or injury to the consumer can be very expensive for the company in terms of law suits and litigation. The courts generally hold the organizations responsible for any such injuries caused by faulty products designed, produced or distributed by them. In America, an Act was passed in 1972, known as the Consumer Product Safety Act which sets and enforces product standards.
4. International implications:
In this technological age and continuous global interaction, quality is an international concern. To meet global competition, the product must meet quality and price expectations. Export of products to other countries is very important economic factor for any country.

7 Largest Factories In The World
Well-run factories are imperative to the success of any consumer goods companies, and even to the well-being of whole economies. Companies can corner whole markets by recognizing a viable product and acquiring or constructing a factory to focus on specialised, mass production.
While a factory is a huge investment with equally huge maintenance costs, these locations are used to manufacture and sell in bulk, cutting overall production costs to a minimum. Not only do these companies cut back on costs, but their factories also allow for reasonably cheap labor and create employment, especially when constructed or acquired near towns.
Walmart, the most notorious – and largest – discount store in the United States, has numerous massive-scale distribution centers to cater to its 11,088 locations. Its rival, Target, has four import distribution centers to cater to its import needs. Hyundai and Volkswagen have the largest automobile plants in the world, as a way to give themselves the competitive edge in expanding and increasing their production output.
Typically, those institutions and companies with the largest factories also are similarly some of the largest and most influential names in the world. The following are the 7 largest factories in the world, and the names behind them.

Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg plant
Area = 204 km2  (79.77 sq mi) / Population = 122,457 / GDP = $128,000 (2013)
Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg plant - Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg plant has produced over 40 million cars over the years. It is the largest auto plant in the world, covering a whooping 6,500,000 m². This imposing factory is so huge that floor workers are allowed to use bicycles to make their way around. What’s more fascinating about this factory is that the employees can be working on more than five different cars at a time without compromising on efficiency or quality.
The factory also possesses the largest state of the art European paint shop. It’s the first paint shop to use eco-friendly water-based paint.
The Hyundai Motor Company’s Ulsan Factory - The Hyundai Motor Company’s Ulsan manufacturing facility occupies a total space of 5,050,000 m². This South Korean plant is spread over 1,225 acres of land. It has five distinct production plants and is able to produce a car every 12 seconds. That’s equivalent to an impressive 1.53 million units annually.
The site is so large that it houses its own hospital, fire services, road network, and sewage treatment plant. The Hyundai Motor Company’s Ulsan factory also boasts over 500,000 trees and an exclusive pier with a capacity of hosting three 50,000-ton cargo ships at a time.
Aalsmeer Flower Auction Building - Technically not a mainstream factory, Aalsmeer Flower Auction building is the largest building in the world in terms of its real estate space: It covers a gigantic 518,000 m² and is home to the largest flower auction worldwide. The building is 740m long and 700m wide.
Approximately 25 million flowers from countries such as Kenya, Colombia, Ethiopia and Ecuador are traded here on a daily basis. The building covers 243 acres, which is arguably the most fragrant edifice in the world. Flowers are rigorously checked for perfection before they are sold. Sales increase dramatically during holidays such as Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day.
Tesla Factory - Elon Musk’s Tesla Company has been all the rage of late. Tesla Motors focuses solely on the production of electric cars and electric powertrain components. Situated in Fremont, California, this expansive automobile car production facility has a footprint of 510,000 m².
Tesla didn’t build this factory from the ground up. Instead, they bought a factory formerly owned by General Motors and Toyota known as New United Motor Manufacturing. Tesla reportedly paid $42 million for the space and took over in 2010. The Tesla Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Roadster are manufactured in this plant.
The Boeing Factory in Everett - Everett, Washington is home to the largest Boeing facility in the world. The Boeing Everett Factory has a mind-blowing floor area of 398,000 m². It covers 98.3 acres of land, and it is the location where the Boeing 747, 767, and 777 are made. The assembly of the newly launched 787 Dreamliner also takes place here.
Construction of the factory began in 1966 after Pan American World Airways placed an order for 25 747s valued at $525 million. This factory also features Tully’s coffee stands, cafes, a theatre and the Boeing Store. Boeing also allows factory tours through the Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour.
Mitsubishi Motors North America - Founded in 1981, Mitsubishi Motors North America oversees the manufacturing, production, sales, research and development of the Mitsubishi car brand across the US, Mexico, the Caribbean and Canada through a well-developed network of over 700 car dealers.
To keep up with this demand, the company has put up a massive 220,000 m² factory that mainly deals with the Mitsubishi Outlander. It has also produced other cars such as the Mitsubishi Galant, Eclipse, Eclipse Spyder, Endeavor and Chrysler Sebring. This gargantuan factory is located in Normal, Illinois.
Belvidere Assembly Plant - Located in Illinois, United States, Belvidere Assembly Plant is a Chrysler factory that assembles car brands such as the Jeep Compass, the Jeep Patriot and the Dodge Dart. The plant has also assembled past models such as Dodge Caliber, Chrysler Imperial, Dodge Dynasty, Chrysler New Yorker and the Plymouth Neon.
The plant measures 330,000 m² and is 700m long and 300m wide spread over 280 acres of land. Its labor force mainly consists of robots, with its body shop hosting approximately 780 robots.

Oil Prices, Taxes and You
What Determines Oil Prices?
The law of supply and demand primarily affects the oil industry by determining the price of oil. The price, and expectations about the price, of oil are the major determining factors in how companies in the oil industry allocate their resources. Prices create certain incentives that influence behavior; this behavior eventually feeds back into supply and demand to determine the price of oil.
Crude oil, or “black gold,” is one of the world's most precious commodities: its price affects the economic ecosystem at every level, from family budgets to corporate earnings to the nation's GDP. Crude oil prices are also incredibly sensitive, changing quickly in response to news cycles, policy changes, and fluctuations in the world's markets, and price drops and spikes can send global exchanges into a tizzy.
The price of gas affects a variety of goods and services because many economic activities use oil as an energy source.  No one likes to pay higher prices, but the global oil market is more complicated than most people realize, and the price of oil is dependent upon many different factors.
If an oil-rich area becomes politically unstable, supplier markets react by bidding up the price of oil so that supplies are still available to the highest bidder.  In this instance, only the perception of a shortage in supply can increase prices, even while production levels remains constant.

(1) Medicine (2) Plastic (3) Around the House (5) Transportation  (6) Business
Oil shows up in thousands of places besides your car's fuel tank and engine. It's true that most oil is used as a source of energy in the United States and that's not likely to change anytime soon.
The average barrel of oil yields the following: gasoline (42%), diesel (20%), jet fuel (9%), heating oil (4.5%), heavy fuel oil (4.5%), liquefied petroleum gases (4.5%) and other products (16%).
1. Medicine - Petroleum is used in many of the medical products we take for granted. Visit any hospital or doctor's office and you will find these items that are derived from petroleum: heart valves, artificial limbs, stethoscopes, syringes, hearing aids, vaporizers, anesthetics, antiseptics, operating gloves and equipment tubing.
2. Plastic - Plastic is everywhere, and this carbon-based polymer compound is an essential part of everyd
In addition, plastic is used in a wide range of products that require shaping and molding. These include computer housings, toys, eyeglass lenses, shingles, computer disks, athletic shoes and thousands of other products.
3. Around the House - Look in your closet and you will find clothing made from petroleum-based fibers including rayon, nylon, polyester and artificial furs. Look down at your floors and you will likely find petroleum in the form of carpet, linoleum or other synthetic flooring. The kitchen is stocked with lots of products that rely on petroleum: appliance casings, dishware, cooking utensils, ammonia, glue, tape, ink, candles, matches, shoe polish, dishwashing liquid and many other cleaning products.
4. In the Garage - It's more than the gas in your car that is impacted by crude oil prices. Under the hood are several other petroleum-based products that keep your car running smoothly and efficiently including hoses, wiring, antifreeze, transmission fluid, brake fluid, grease and motor oil. Beyond the lubricants, car interiors have many parts made from petroleum.
Other items in the garage that depend on oil include your lawnmower, bicycle, fertilizer, garden hose and that leftover paint in the corner. When you pull the car out of the garage and head down your driveway, you may be driving over asphalt that is a byproduct of petroleum.
5. Transportation - While rising oil prices have a direct impact when you buy gas for your vehicle, the indirect impact is felt throughout the economy. When an airline pays more for jet fuel, that cost may be passed on to consumers in the form of higher ticket prices or fuel surcharges. When the railroad and trucks that deliver food to the supermarket pay more for diesel fuel, the added cost shows up during checkout when you pay for your groceries.
The tankers that bring the oil to the U.S. from other foreign sources are paying more for their fuel too. When oil goes up, in a sense we end up paying for the increase twice – once for the raw product and again to get it here so we can refine and use it.
6. Business - Depending on the type of business they are engaged in, companies will be impacted by rising oil prices in a variety of ways: (1) Higher fuel and lubricant costs to run machinery and vehicles (2) Higher bills for heating oil and other energy produced by burning oil (3) Pay more for packaging (4) Retail businesses that rely on customers coming to them by car may experience a drop-off in customer volume and thus reduced demand (5) Businesses that rely on discretionary spending, such as travel destinations, will see fewer visitors.

Taxes
The government collects taxes to pay for the goods and services it provides including schools, roads, law enforcement, libraries, parks and military protection.
Definition/Background By definition, taxes shift resources from the private sector (households and businesses) to the public sector.
A fee charged ("levied") by a government on a product, income, or activity. If tax is levied directly on personal or corporate income, then it is a direct tax. If tax is levied on the price of a good or service, then it is called an indirect tax.
The purpose of the shift is to pay for the goods, services, and government operations that we, through our elected representatives, ask government to provide.
There are many different types of taxes; the major ones include sales, income and personal property taxes.
Most federal government tax revenue comes from personal income and payroll taxes.
Payments to Social Security recipients, the costs of national defense, medical expenditures and interest payments on the national debt constitute the bulk of federal government spending.
Most state and local government revenues come from sales taxes, grants from the federal government, personal income taxes, and property taxes.
The purpose of taxation is to finance government expenditure.
The bulk of state and local government revenue is spent for education, public welfare, road construction and repair and public safety.
Nobody likes to pay taxes, but we all enjoy our roads, parks, and public libraries.
Understanding the role of citizens as taxpayers and the role of government in providing goods and services to the public can help prepare all to be fully engaged citizens.

What is Quality?
Quality is the standard of something as measured against other things of a similar kind or the degree of excellence of something.
According to business excellent, Quality is referred to how the recipient of the product or service views the product or service: before buying, upon delivery, and after the delivery-and use.
In manufacturing, a measure of excellence or a state of being free from defects, deficiencies and significant variations. It is brought about by strict and consistent commitment to certain standards that achieve uniformity of a product in order to satisfy specific customer or user requirements. ISO 8402-1986 standard defines quality as "the totality of features and characteristics of a product or service that bears its ability to satisfy stated or implied needs." If an automobile company finds a defect in one of their cars and makes a product recall, customer reliability and therefore production will decrease because trust will be lost in the car's quality.
On factory floors all over the world, attention to quality in product-manufacturing operations now determines market success. Attention to quality in the operations used to produce engineering designs--in other words, attention to the data produced by digital modeling activities - is proving to be equally fruitful. Practitioners of design quality assurance are reaping great benefits by pushing quality awareness earlier into the engineering process.
As a rule, design engineering has lagged behind the shop floor in awareness of product and process quality. Unfortunately, very real costs are associated with inattention to design quality. If errors or omissions in design data are not addressed early, more costly changes are required later in the product development process.
For example, a major aerospace company recently discovered that it was losing millions of dollars as a result of inaccurate digital design data. Product quality on the manufacturing floor was high, and customers were receiving excellent finished products.

Warranty/Product Guarantee
A guarantee is usually given with the product you are buying, for free. It is a promise from the trader or manufacturer that they will repair or replace the item, or give you a refund, if it becomes faulty within a certain amount of time.
A guarantee is an agreement from the manufacturer confirming that they will repair or replace an item if something goes wrong within a certain amount of time after you buy it.
Household products like electrical and kitchen appliances and furniture often come with a guarantee.
A guarantee gives you additional protection and strengthens your consumer rights. The guarantee usually applies to the item during a specific time after you purchase it.
Guarantees can also apply to services, for example, installation and repair services in your home can have a guarantee.
Check the terms and conditions
Always check the terms and conditions of the guarantee. For example, you may need to register the guarantee with the manufacturer for certain conditions to be met. Unless you are expressly told otherwise when you bought the item, deal directly with the seller of the item if you need to return it under the guarantee.
Don’t forget the small print
The guarantee might explain what happens if you give or sell the item to somebody else during the guarantee period. Find out exactly what is covered by the guarantee. For example, with electrical goods, are all parts or just specific parts covered? Is labour included and is there a limit on the amount of labour covered.
Warranties
When you are buying a product, the shop may ask if you would like to buy a warranty. This is like an insurance policy - it covers the product beyond the manufacturer's guarantee period.
So, you shouldn’t have to pay for repairs if the item breaks or becomes faulty within the period covered by the warranty.

Before you agree to a warranty, remember:
(1) It is completely optional and can be expensive, so do not feel pressured to take one.
(2) Consider the cost of replacing the faulty item and compare this to the cost of the warranty. Replacing the item may cost less than the warranty.
(3) Guarantees and warranties are legally binding on the company – they are enforceable through the courts if necessary.

Quality of Life?
Quality of Life (QOL) is the general well-being of individuals and societies. QOL has a wide range of contexts, including the fields of international development, healthcare, politics and employment. It is important not to mix up the concept of QOL with a more recent growing area of health related QOL (HRQOL). When we look at HRQOL we in effect look at QOL and its relationship with health.
Quality of life should not be confused with the concept of standard of living, which is based primarily on income.
Standard indicators of the quality of life include not only wealth and employment but also the built environment, physical and mental health, education, recreation and leisure time, and social belonging.
According to Business Dictionary, daily living enhanced by wholesome food and clean air and water, enjoyment of unfettered open spaces and bodies of water, conservation of wildlife and natural resource, security from crime, and protection from radiation and toxic substances. It may also be used as a measure of the energy and power a person is endowed with that enable him or her to enjoy life and prevail over life's challenges irrespective of the handicaps he or she may have.
But one of the most interesting themes regarding the holistic concept of well-being is the quality of life and happiness and its relationships to travel and tourism. Quality of life implies a balance of these different domains. Much of the time, it is impossible to change the objective indicators and these may or may not affect peoples’ levels of satisfaction and stress.

How to Improve Quality of Life?
A lacking quality of life used to be associated with the poor – and they remain the largest sufferers – but it is important not to confuse “standard of living” with “quality of life.”
Standard of living refers primarily to your economic status – your earnings, employment, benefits, overall safety, and education among others. Every factor of standard of living is able to be determined by numbers. It is an objective determination that is easily calculated.
Quality of life is subjective in that it is not always easy to understand someone’s quality of life. If they are struggling in a household without adequate heat, dealing with addiction, or even working a stressful job that interferes with their ability to sleep – their quality of life can drop substantially.

How to Improve Your Quality of Life

Benefits of Standards for Consumers’ Quality of Life
Safer products and services: Consumers of all types (i.e. parents, employers, workers, athletes) list health and safety as their top consumer concerns. Adherence to standards and third-party conformity assessment gives the public confidence that the products or systems they purchase will not cause harm when used as intended.
Enhanced purchasing power: In addition to increased confidence in the safety and quality of their purchases, consumers benefit from efforts to make standardized products stand out in the marketplace. Manufacturers are responding to consumer demands by making their products more user-friendly, multi-functional, and even less expensive than the competition.
Simplicity and compatibility: Standards provide consumers with greater assurance that the various components they purchase will be easy to use, and that components (i.e. audio-visual equipment, car parts, computer software) will work together.
Improved social and economic well-being: Standardization not only impacts the quality and safety of individual items or services, it also plays an integral role in improving the overall health and safety of Canadians, and of their physical environment.

It can be used in the treatment and prophylaxis of anaemia.  It is mainly absorbed in the small intestine, but can be absorbed along the entire length of the alimentary canal. It is more readily absorbed as the ferrous state.  There is very little difference in the amount absorbed among the various ferrous salts and the choice of product is usually driven by side effects and cost. According to a 2001 report by the Council on Foreign Relations, health is linked to political stability, financial security and social strength. Healthy people make the nation's base more stable. The report mentions that the average Russian male can expect to live as little as 58 years of age. This in turn puts a tremendous pressure on his own family and on the country by depleting human capital. If the “good of the country” is not enough reason to be healthy, then focus on personal reasons.

HEALTHY FOODS
WHY HEALTHY FOODS?
Healthy foods are important to sustain growth, repair and maintain vital processes, promote longevity, reduce disease, strengthen and maintain the body and its functions. Healthy foods should contain:  (1) B-vitamins, Low cholesterol and Essential minerals, (2) Low calories, Carbohydrates and Vitamin C, (3) High dietary fibre, Low fat and Nutrient-rich, and (4) Omega-3 fatty acids, High protein and Vitamin D

Diet Type & BodyKey™ Programme
The BodyKey personalised assessment tool consists of a scientifically validated questionnaire, and recommends the type of diet that is suited to you. It either recommends a low-carb diet or a low-fat diet to reach and maintain a healthy weight.

Low-Carb Diet and Low-Fat Diet
Low-Carb Diet
A low-carb diet aims to replace simple carbohydrates which are easily digestible with complex carbohydrates rich in fibre.
A typical low-carb diet should contain about 30-40% of complex carbs, more than 20% of protein and less than 40% of healthy fats.
Tips for a low-carb diet
Cook a meat or fish-based main dish (eat more protein).
Replace bread, potatoes or white rice with extra vegetables and brown rice.
Have a handful of nuts e.g. almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds as a snack.
Choose whole fruits and consume in moderation.
Limit intake of brown sugar, maple syrup, honey, molasses and artificial sweeteners.
Add beans, lentils and peas to your diet.

Low-Fat Diet
A low-fat diet places emphasis on complex carbohydrates (50-55%), contains more than 20% of protein and is low in fats (less than 30%).
Fats are not eliminated entirely but reduced to comprise less than 30% of the total diet.
Tips for a low fat diet
Choose lean meats, fish and chicken for a main dish.
Include low-fat sources of protein in your diet - dried beans and peas, tofu, low fat milk, low fat cheese.
Bake, poach or grill meats and let the fat drip away.
Use herbs and spices to flavor meat instead of butter, cheese and cream sauces.
Avoid deep frying foods.
Minimise full-fat dairy and full-fat meat.

Balanced Nutrition
Be Good to YOUR HEART
The HEART is one of the most important organs in our body.
It pumps blood throughout our body to deliver oxygen and essential nutrients to other vital organs and tissues so that we can function efficiently. Therefore, it’s very important that we take good care of it.
However, many people go through life unaware that nutrition greatly affects their heart health, besides being overweight and smoking. A diet that is excessively rich in energy and lacking in other essential nutrients is also a potential cause that can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). CVDs do not discriminate - young or old, male or female. Anyone can be a victim.

Heart Health
OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS, GREEN TEA, COENZYME Q10 (COQ10) AND GARLIC
OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS – Not all fats are bad for health. Some beneficial fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids are good. Deep sea fish such as salmon, mackerel, anchovies and sardines are some of the best sources for omega-3 fatty acids providing 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA. Benefits - help reduce the risk of CVDs by lowering the levels of fat in blood. In addition, they can also slow down the formation of plaques and blood clots, which helps to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries).
GREEN TEA – Green tea extract, derived from the leaves of the plant, is important us mainly because it contains both catechins and theaflavins, whic are strong antioxidants. Benefits - contains catechins and theaflavins which are believed to bind dietary cholesterol in the gut, enabling it to pass through the body with reduced absorption.
COENZYME Q10 (COQ10) – As we age, the CoQ10 concentration level in our body reduces, as does our energy levels. Supplementation is ideal for increasing both levels. Benefits - in our cells helps produce energy from the food we eat. It is highly concentrated in our heart to support and meet its high energy demand. Stress, aging and medical conditions can affect COQ10.
GARLIC – Licorice complements garlic since it counteracts the stomach irritation that may arise due to consuming garlic. The garlic-licorice formulation eliminates any unpleasant after-odour, so as to not offend you and those around you. Benefits - can be used for general wellbeing and certain treatments. As we age, our arteries tend to lose their ability to stretch and flex. Garlic can be helpful to reduce the hardening of blood vessels effect.

Health and Fitness (Balance)

Keep it Steady!
Balance is your ability to maintain your centre of gravity over your base of support, and many people take it.
Many studies show that people who practise tai chi (which emphasises gentle movements and stretching) have a significantly better sense of joint position and better reaction times than people of the same age who did not practise such balance-intense activities.
By: Revathi Murugappan / The Star / 29 Nov 2015

BALANCE is the key to life. Often, we struggle to find that two-syllable word in a world that craves extremes and quick fixes, whether it is losing weight, acquiring wealth or finding happiness.
To function at our best, we definitely need to balance taking care of ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
Focusing too much on any one facet catches up on us and leads to health problems in the neglected areas.
For instance, if you spend an enormous amount of time contemplating your navel, your brain waves start to slow down and your mental agility will start to go. Likewise, if you were to over-exercise, like I occasionally do, and not allow your body adequate rest, you would probably injure yourself.
Whenever you amplify certain aspects of life, you lose perspective and balance.
When we exercise, we also need to strike a right balance. In addition to cardiovascular, strength and flexibility components, we need to add balance exercises to maintain balance and increase confidence as we age.
Most people don’t spend any time thinking about their balance until it’s too late. They are jolted “awake” when they fall and sustain a fracture, or injure themselves.
As we get older, our fear of falling increases. But, balance isn’t just a concern for the elderly, who are more prone to falls. Balance training is important for everyone, from professional athletes to casual exercisers and doting grandparents.
Good balance and a strong core go hand in
hand as a controlled wobble activates the deep core muscles to help tighten the midsection. And a strong core usually means better posture, less back pain and improved performance during workouts.
Plus, the better your balance, the easier it is to do quick turns and lunges, and the less likely you are to fall or injure yourself. If you haven’t thought much about enhancing your physical balancing skills, it’s time to start.
According to Dr Vonda Wright, author of Fitness After 40: How To Stay Strong At Any Age, there is a simple method to test your equilibrium.
Stand next to a firm surface such as a counter or chair back, hold your hands above the surface in case you need support, close your eyes and lift one foot off the ground, balance on the other foot and count out loud the number of seconds you are able to balance.
“The shorter your balance time, the ‘older’ your equilibrium is. If you balanced for more than 22 seconds, your balance is as young as a 20-year-old’s; 15 seconds, you have the balance of a 30-year-old; 7.2 seconds, of a 40-year-old; 3.7 seconds, of a 50-year-old; and if you toppled over right away, you are 60 in balance years,” she writes.
Not only does balance training benefit your neuromuscular coordination, it also helps with muscle isolation. During balance training, you have to maintain stabilisation, and you are forced to engage an individual muscle predominantly so that you are not using other muscles to help you compensate or “cheat”. Hence, your body has to work a lot harder.
The National Academy of Sports Medicine states that through a complex system of environmental feedback, cues from the bottom of your feet, the relation of your inner ear to gravity, and what you see, your body senses which muscles to activate or deactivate to maintain your desired position.
When the information received is too complex to translate, the system is overwhelmed and you lose your balance.
With balance training, you can master what once seemed like impossible tasks - just like you did when you first removed the training wheels from your childhood bicycle.
Many studies also show that people who practise the non-competitive martial art of tai chi (which emphasises gentle movements and stretching) have a significantly better sense of joint position and better reaction times than people of the same age who did not practise such balance-intense activities.
This meditation-in-motion art helps alleviate stress and promote inner peace.
There are many fitness tools designed to improve your balance, such as Bosu trainers, stability balls, inflatable discs, foam rollers, wobble boards etc. However, you don’t need any of these gadgets - your body alone (and perhaps a chair or wall) is enough to work on balance training.
Exercises include standing on one foot, walking in a straight line with one foot placed in front of the other while gazing forward, walking on the balls of the feet, walk
ing on the heels, side leg raises, single-leg squats and so forth. Modify as you progress.
Keep safety in mind at all times: remove objects around you and stand near a wall or stable surface in case you lose your balance.
A fun game for the whole family to try is the one-legged clock. Balance on one leg, torso straight, eyes in front and hands on the hips.
Visualise a clock and point your arm straight overhead to 12, then to the side (three), and then circle low and around to nine without losing your balance.
Increase the challenge by having a partner call out the different times to you. Switch to the opposite arm and leg, and repeat.
Another good way to train your balance is to work on an uneven surface (a beach would be best).
Simply stand and lift your heels off the ground. Once you’ve found the balance, close your eyes as your sense of vision plays a big role in the balance equation.
To add difficulty, lift one foot off while you relax your other body parts. Keep your eyes closed. Sounds easy, but it’s not. You have to maintain a certain level of calmness and focus. This also helps in dealing with anger issues.
Turn your workouts into a balancing act for added benefits.

Teach Young Financial Prudence

DE facto Law Minister Nancy Shukri, in responding to a question by Datuk Hashbullah Osman (BN-Gerik), told Parliament on Nov 17, 2015 that more than 22,000 below the age of 35 had been declared bankrupt during the last four years.
This is alarming and probably unprecedented in the history of the Insolvency Department.
It is a stark reflection of the lack of financial prudence on the part of Generation Y.
Lavish spending and high living have resulted in thousands of them, on the threshold of adulthood, already being burdened with mounting debts, unable to service their personal loans, car loans, credit card loans and many other commitments.
Debt is something like quick sand in that it has the tendency to draw its victim deeper and deeper in.
Financial prudence is not an inborn trait but a virtue that has to be acquired.
It is a dereliction of duty if parents do not educate their children on the importance of living within their means besides nurturing the saving habit.
How a man uses money, makes it, saves it, and spends it is perhaps one of the best tests of practical wisdom.
Financial institutions are also partly to blame for this deplorable state of affairs.
Personal loans are granted without collateral. Similarly credit cards are issued with high credit limits and it is easy for one to get more than one card.
If customers sources of income, spending culture, repayment pattern and unavoidable commitments are closely monitored, habitual defaulters can be detected and disciplined early.
In this way, thousands of lavish spenders could have been saved from bankruptcy long before they reached the beyond redemption stage.
Youths are the pillars of a progressive nation. The Government must put in place proactive measures to prevent them from ending up as bankrupts and becoming a liability to society.

THREE CRITICAL WAYS TO BOOST YOUR CAREER

DURING the course of my training sessions, I have been approached by many participants seeking advice on how they could have better careers. Most of them complain to me that they feel their careers are not moving in the right direction, hating their jobs or superiors, etc. My usual question to them is, "So what are you doing about it?" Shockingly, most say that they are not doing anything! This is something that surprises me because these people are unhappy about a situation and yet are not doing anything to resolve it. Why is this so!
My view is that these people are just taking the easy way out. They place responsibility of their careers on their managers and then justify their lack of career success by simply putting the blame on their companies or superiors. My stand on this matter is simple: Why put something as important as your career and professional fate in other people's hands? Why don't you take full responsibility for your career and consider anything done by your manager or company as a bonus!
I assure you that once you have decided to adopt this philosophy, you will get an opportunity to see your career progress and grow beyond your own expectations.
BE GOOD AT WHAT YOU ARE DOING
This is a simple but excellent piece of advice. If you are technically good at what you are doing, opportunities will come because all organisations are looking for good and competent professionals all the time. Being good also means that you will have to keep up with the changes in your profession. The best dentist in the world will be 'obsolete' if his knowledge of dentistry is outdated even by a few
years. In the process of In developing yourself, do not only concentrate on your technical skills; improve your behaviourial skills, too.
This may sound strange, but it is something you will have to do to get the best out of your career.
Ask yourself this question: What have I done to tell the world that I am very good at my job and am available? If you say, nothing, then that's why you are still at your present job. Being good at your job is important; letting the world know about this may be equally, if not more important! Some ways to market yourself would be by writing articles for publication in industry journals, going to the right forums to network and, participating in activities organised by your industry: this will raise your profile and importantly, tell people that this’ very talented professional exists!
Better jobs will follow.
You are the product! The best product that is badly packaged may create a perception that it is mediocre. Hence, invest in your wardrobe and dress well as it creates a positive first and lasting impression among people you meet. We take a lot of effort in our appearance when we go for interviews for example, because we want to make a good first impression. The question is, why can't we dress like we are going for interviews everyday! I assure you that it is certainly worth it as it may pay back many thousands of times over!
The corporate world is very competitive today and you will need all the help you can get to have good careers. Using the tips above, will surely assist in putting you on the right track.

DEVELOPING CONFIDENT LEADERS
By Dr Victor S.L. Tan
A GREAT waste of human resource is people who have the knowledge and skill to lead well but do not, due to their lack of self- confidence. Yet what do companies do to develop people — equipping them with more knowledge and skill with the hope that somehow and someday they will improve.
But people cannot improve if they lack confidence in themselves. How then can we help people develop their self-confidence to bring out the best in them?
OVERCOME THE FEAR
The first step towards building confidence is overcoming fear. Many people have fears that prevent them from achieving great things. Many of these fears are more psychological than real. As they say F.EAR. stands for False Evidence Appearing Real. In our public speaking course, we observed that many participants have an obsessive fear of speaking in front of a crowd. They fear what others would think of them. They fear saying stupid things. They fear their mind will freeze and they would have nothing to say. And, most of all, they fear making a fool of themselves in front of others. We first flush out all their fears before we actually teach them the techniques of effective speaking. And, of course, we provide them a safe and friendly audience to practise their speeches to overcome these fears.
BUILD CONFIDENCE THROUGH PRACTICE
Developing self-confidence comes from doing and practising those things we are not comfortable with over and over again until we become very good at. For example, a project leader I know is technically very competent.
However, he messed up in meetings as he lacked confidence in leading others. During the duration of the project, I gradually exposed him to more and more meetings with close supervision and guided help. Eventually, he became not only very good at leading project meetings but he has also mastered the art of handling people and issues well. With each successful meeting his self-confidence soared and it reinforced and spurred him to do better. With a hands-on guided approach, I taught him the art of facilitation and interacting with his team until he achieves mastery in this area.
ENABLE ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH ACTIVITIES
It is not possible to will oneself to become confident overnight. While self-talk and self-affirmation are useful techniques to set the mind to be mentally positive, concrete actions followed by positive results are the key to creating that sense of self-confidence.
A good way to develop confident leaders is to start them at a young age. There are some very good programmes which develop the young to build self-confidence
through fun activities. Recently,
I came across an excellent programme by a company called ISTEVIN CHAMPIONS which is doing a great job developing the confidence of young people to excel in their respective tasks. According to the school principal, Sheena, her passion is to develop youth to have full confidence in themselves so that they can become better leaders in the future and succeed in their careers and lives. By enabling these youths to become champions in their respective areas of strength, she and her team develop the self- confidence of young children which is the critical factor needed to bring out the best in them.
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF
The ultimate confidence comes from self-belief. I once listened to Leslie Brown, the famous motivational speaker, who related his story about how he was mistakenly labelled educably mentally retarded when he was young. His self-esteem was severely low during his childhood days, till one day a school teacher noticed his "talent" and told him that he was a smart kid and that he could do things like normal kids do. And from that day on, his self-confidence was boosted. He finally believes in himself. Les grew up to become one of the most powerful motivational speakers of all time. He is also an author of many books and a host of his won TV show. He won over 80 awards for his outstanding work in helping people to realise their potential for achievement.
RECOGNITION AND REINFORCEMENT
To understand how confidence is developed, observe how a toddler learns to walk. The eager parents provide constant encouragement for the toddler to first stand on his or her own feet. The parents patiently coach the young toddler to stand and pursue on despite his many falls. This process takes time and patience. When the toddler succeeds, there is great applause not only from the parents but often the grandparents at the other end. And when the toddler takes the first step, there is even louder claps and cheering. They do not reprimand the toddler for falling down no matter how many times, but they never fail to applaud to reinforce the behaviour-each time the toddler the right thing, either standing up or walking a step forward.
Such is the power of recognition and reinforcement that instils the self-confidence and self-belief in toddlers to empower them to learn to walk.
In conclusion, self-confidence can be developed by surpassing your self-limitations through overcoming unwarranted fears, repetitive practice of a skill, achievement of impressive results, a belief in yourself and recognition and reinforcement.
