The World's Billionaires

World's Billionaires by: Luisa Kroll, Forbes Staff.
The ranks of the world’s billionaires, as monitored and tallied by our global wealth team, have yet again reached all-time highs. The 2013 Forbes Billionaires list now boasts 1,426 names, with an aggregate net worth of $5.4 trillion, up from $4.6 trillion. We found 210 new ten-figure fortunes. Once again the U.S. leads the list with 442 billionaires, followed by Asia-Pacific (386), Europe (366), the Americas (129) and the Middle East & Africa (103). Resurgent asset prices are the driving force behind the rising wealth of the super-rich around the globe. While last year almost as many fortunes fell as rose, this year gainers outnumbered losers by 4-to-1. Many new names made the list thanks to free-spending consumers. To name a few: Diesel jeans mogul Renzo Rosso at $3 billion, retailer Bruce Nordstrom at $1.2 billion and designer Tory Burch at $1 billion. Carlos Slim is once again the world’s richest person, followed by Bill Gates. Amancio Ortega of Spanish retailer Zara moves up to No. 3 for the first time. He is the year’s biggest gainer, adding $19.5 billion to his fortune in one year. He moves ahead of Warren Buffett, despite the fact that the U.S. investing legend added $9.5 billion to his fortune. This is the first year since 2000 that Buffett has not been among the top 3. The year’s biggest loser is Brazilian Eike Batista, whose fortune dropped by $19.4 billion, or equivalent to about $50 million a day. His rank falls from no. 7 to no. 100 in the world....Read full story.

Pam Omidyar, Co Founder
Pam is a philanthropist dedicated to building peace, advancing human freedom, and creating opportunities for people to improve their lives. In 2001, with the support of husband Pierre, Pam founded HopeLab to pursue her belief that a video game might improve the lives of young cancer patients by giving them a chance to “blast away” at their disease. In August 2006, HopeLab released Re- Mission, a breakthrough video game scientifically proven to improve compliance with prescribed medications and give young people a sense of power and control over their disease. In 2011, HopeLab launched Zamzee, an online rewards platform aimed at reducing sedentary behavior and obesity in kids. Research has demonstrated that Zamzee boosts physical activity in kids by 30% or more, the equivalent of an additional marathon of running each month. HopeLab is now embarking upon a deeper exploration of how science, technology and the power of play can be harnessed to support resilience in young people as a way to improve health. Pam remains a guiding visionary at HopeLab, serving as chair of the Board of Directors. In 2004, Pam co-founded Omidyar Network, a philanthropic investment firm, with her husband Pierre. Omidyar Network is a mission-based organization that funds both for-profit companies and non-profit organizations to create opportunity for individuals around the world to improve their own lives and therefore make powerful, lasting contributions to their communities. It has funded organizations in areas such as financial inclusion, education, entrepreneurship, property rights, consumer internet as well as mobile and government transparency. As a member of the board, Pam plays an ongoing role in steering the organization's work. In 2005, Pam began work on Humanity United, a foundation committed to building peace and advancing human freedom. At home and in the corners of the globe where these ideals are challenged most, Humanity United leads and supports efforts to lift up the voices and will of people, ensure good governance and the rule of law, engage markets and business as a force for change, and encourage the exploration of promising ideas and innovations to end mass violence and modern-day slavery – all with the belief that everyone has the right to a life that is peaceful and free. As the foundation’s guiding visionary, Pam was integral in developing Humanity United’s mission and values and is actively engaged in steering its course as board chair. Pam serves as a member of the Advisory Council to The Elders. Home as an Office

Working from home as an alternative to employment in the traditional office has become a popular trend in many countries. Several years ago, in Malaysia, it became a hot topic of discussion with the Government’s decision to formally introduce the concept. The home office concept which was made available by solutions in information and communication technology (ICT) is certainly a welcome as it can encourage women, senior citizens and the disabled to work or do business from home. Yet, concerns have already emerged citizens and the disabled to work or do business from home. Yet, concerns have already emerged on how this concept can successfully take off in the country. Technology, including the computer and accessories such as printer, the internet and telephone connection and the training involved only make up a portion of the necessary requirements to set up a home office. Other requirements especially business skills must also be considered. Business skills such as time management, professionalism, work ethics and business negotiations are extremely important for those working from home.   At present, there are various organizations such as the Women’s Institute of Management offering courses in business skills and management. However, this training should be accessible to all besides for women who choose to work from home. Another challenge in working out of the traditional office environment is getting market access. How does a person working from home get business? A solution to this could be a formal and comprehensive database, perhaps compiled by relevant agencies on services provided by the workforce from the work office. For a start, financial assistance could be provided for those who want to set up a home office. The assistance could be in the form of micro loans to purchase the relevant ICT tools, as well as incentives such as cheaper rates in Internet or telephone connections. Once things start to work out well, frequent review of the work and the environment are necessary. Unlike working in a traditional office, working alone at home could lead to a sense of alienation. Therefore, there must be a balance between working individually and having  the proper social and business skills when dealing with clients and customers. The business and work suited for the home office covers jobs in information processing such as editing, writing, research, accounting, telemarketing, and a range of ICT related work such as Website and software development. Although the initial target group for the home office comprises women, senior citizens and the disabled, ultimately the concept should be extended to anyone who chooses to work from home.

Employment

An employee contributes labor and/or expertise to an endeavor of an employer and is usually hired to perform specific duties which are packaged into a job. An Employee is a person who is hired to provide services to a company on a regular basis in exchange for compensation and who does not provide these services as part of an independent business. Meanwhile, employment is a relationship between two parties, usually based on a contract, one being the employer and the other being the employee.

Usually employers often wonder why their staff get de-motivated and develop negative attitudes. Moreover, employers also wonder why they do not change their mindsets in tandem with the changes in the business environment especially when they have stability in their jobs and enjoy the benefits provided by the company. Other than that, employers get frustrated particularly when the company takes good care of their employees and the staff does not show any loyalty or responsibility in what they do.

On the other hand, the employees have a different story to tell. They say that they come into an organization will all the desire to do their best. Then they get bosses from hell who do not have a life and do not expect their subordinates to have one either.

How do we create positive mindset? Between the leaders of the team and the subordinates, there must be a happy medium. How do we get them motivated and gung-ho about the routine of daily jobs? There should be two way commitment and communication between the employers and employees. There is a list of factors that experts believe will keep good staff highly motivated and willing to change the times. The environment is a crucial factor for any employee. Do not underestimate the physical space of anyone at work.

Nest, it is the question of the work content. What tasks do they have to do? Often it is “dead-end” jobs that frustrate. Day in and day out, the routine kills. Why do you think so many organizations encourage two to three years job-rotation so that no one gets bored and everyone has a new learning curve?

As we know, most employees want to grow in their jobs they need to feel good and some career path should be planned. There are organizations that expect employees in lower level jobs to remain in the same position for decades.

Your pay package and rewards are often looked at as a means of motivation. If the remuneration package is wrong, then whatever you do will have no impact on staff motivation. If you get it right, then it becomes part of the other factors that affect people’s mindsets to work. Don’t for a moment believe that the remuneration is the only motivating force that gets people to be gung-ho about work. Most employees do talk of other frustrations like the dignity of self, the way  are treated and the goals set for them to grow.

Other than that, the work culture plays a very strong role in determining the attitudes and mindsets of employees. Look at the “habits” around the office – the way you do business, the values you practice, the way people communicate with each other and the control management has over the staff. Lastly, relationship between the manager and staff is the most important factor determining the positive or negative mindset of employees. Anyone will tell they will stay even if their job is boring is because they love the boss. If you work in a place that reflects all or most of these statements, you are truly blessed.

Wage labor is the socioeconomic relationship between a worker and an employer, where the worker sells their labor under a formal or informal employment contract. These transactions usually occur in a labor market where wages are market determined. In exchange for the wages paid, the work product generally becomes the undifferentiated property of the employer, except for special cases such as the vesting of intellectual property patents in the United States where patent rights are usually vested in the original personal inventor. A wage laborer is a person whose primary means of income is from the selling of his or her labor in this way.
In modern mixed economies such as that of the OECD countries, it is currently the dominant form of work arrangement. Although most work occurs following this structure, the wage work arrangements of CEOs, professional employees, and professional contract workers are sometimes conflated with class assignments, so that "wage labor" is considered to apply only to unskilled, semi-skilled or manual labor.

In the United States, the standard employment relationship is considered to be at-will, meaning that the employer and employee are both free to terminate the employment at any time and for any cause, or for no cause at all. However, if a termination of employment by the employer is deemed unjust by the employee, there can be legal recourse to challenge such a termination. Unjust termination may include termination due to discrimination because of an individual's race, national origin, sex or gender, pregnancy, age, physical or mental disability, religion, or military status. Additional protections apply in some states, for instance in California unjust termination reasons include marital status, ancestry, sexual orientation or medical condition. Despite whatever agreement an employer makes with an employee for the employee's wages, an employee is entitled to certain minimum wages set by the federal government. The states may set their own minimum wage that is higher than the federal government's to ensure a higher standard of living or living wagefor their residents. Under the Equal Pay Act of 1963 an employer may not give different wages based on sex alone.

Employees are often contrasted with independent contractors, especially when there is dispute as to the worker's entitlement to have matching taxes paid, workers compensation, and unemployment insurance benefits. However, in September 2009, the court case ofBrown v. J. Kaz, Inc. ruled that independent contractors are regarded as employees for the purpose of discrimination laws if they work for the employer on a regular basis, and said employer directs the time, place, and manner of employment.

In non-union work environments, in the United States, unjust termination complaints can be brought to the United States Department of Labor.

Employment is no guarantee of escaping poverty, the International Labour Organisation(ILO) estimates that as many as 40% of workers as poor, not earning enough to keep their families above the $2 a day poverty line. For instance, in India most of the chronically poor are wage earners in formal employment, because their jobs are insecure and low paid and offer no chance to accumulate wealth to avoid risks. This problems appears to be caused by the decreasing likelihood of a simultaneous growth in employment opportunities and in labor productivity. According to the UNRISD, increasing labor productivity appears to have a negative impact on job creation: in the 1960s, a 1% increase in output per worker was associated with a reduction in employment growth of 0.07%, by the first decade of this century the same productivity increase implies reduced employment growth by 0.54%. Both increased employment opportunities and increased labor productivity (as long as it also translates into higher wages) are needed to tackle poverty. Increases in employment without increases in productivity leads to a rise in the number of "working poor", which is why some experts are now promoting the creation of "quality" and not "quantity" in labor market policies. This approach does highlight how higher productivity has helped reduce poverty in East Asia, but the negative impact is beginning to show. In Vietnam, for example, employment growth has slowed while productivity growth has continued. Furthermore, productivity increases do not always lead to increased wages, as can be seen in the United States, where the gap between productivity and wages has been rising since the 1980s.

Researchers at the Overseas Development Institute argue that there are differences across economic sectors in creating employment that reduces poverty. 24 instances of growth were examined, in which 18 reduced poverty. This study showed that other sectors were just as important in reducing unemployment, as manufacturing. The services sector is most effective at translating productivity growth into employment growth. Agriculture provides a safety net for jobs and economic buffer when other sectors are struggling.

Handling Disappointment

Life is complicating when a series of disappointments are present. For most people disappointment appears in their life more often than satisfaction. The way disappointments are handled can have a great bearing on how it is viewed. People have different ways of dealing with disappointment. Some react negatively by sulking or blaming others while others are more positive in trying to understand the reasons behind the disappointment.

On the internet, Wikipedia.org defines disappointment as the feeling of dissatisfaction that follows the failure of expectations or hopes to manifest. Similar to regret, it differs in that a person feeling regret focuses primarily on the personal choices that contributed to a poor outcome, while a person feeling disappointment focuses on the outcome itself. It is also a source of psychological stress. Disappointment is a subjective response related to the anticipated rewards. The psychological results of disappointment vary greatly among individuals; while some recover quickly, others mire in frustration or blame or become depressed.

One way of dealing with disappointment is sulking because it is an easy attitude to adopt. People who sulk commonly adopt the attitude – “Why does everything always happen to me?” Unfortunately it is not productive. Sulking or feeling sorry for themselves will offer discourage other people from lending support. For the sulker it is easier to sit back and sulk rather than making a positive move towards self-help. Feeling sorry for oneself, however, does nothing to lessen the pain of disappointment. It may in fact increase the pain. This does not pave the way to make future disappointments easier to bear.

Another negative and non-productive way to cope with disappointment is to blame others. This all common attitude of pointing the finger at someone will only lead to anger, resentment and unhappiness. When a people is disappointed in another person’s performance, it does not mean that the performer is at fault. Perhaps, the person had too high expectations as to what the performer could actually accomplish.

A positive way to handle disappointment is try to understand the reasons behind the disappointment. It is more productive to analyse the cause of disappointment and then deal with the situation. Sometimes, understanding alone can help reduce the pain of disappointment and help prevent  further disappointment. Also, it helps to remember one does not have to achieve the goals in a given situation but expect some reasonably.

Another positive way to react to disappointment is to use it as a chance for growth. This certainly is not easy but it is the only inevitable part of life. In a situation when one does not get promoted, disappointment should be dealt with by looking at other options.

Disappointments are unwelcome, but regular visitors to everyone’s life. Continues handling of disappointment in a negative manner can lead to negative view itself. Learning not to expect perfection in an imperfect world is one positive way to handle disappointment.

Healthy Personality

The study of healthy personality was ignored for a long time in psychology, instead, mental illness was extensively examined. In the past several decades, however, a growing number of researchers have recognized the capacity for growth and change in the human personality. These "growth psychologists" (most prefer to be called humanistic psychologists) have taken a new and fresh look at human nature and have observed a different type of person from that described by behaviorism and psychoanalysis, the traditional schools of psychology. Whereas behaviorists see individuals as passive responders to external stimuli and psychoanalysts see people as victims of biological forces and childhood conflicts, the humanistic psychologists believe we can strive to become all we are capable of becoming and in the process transform from "normality" to healthy personality.

Healthy personality has proven to be a difficult and elusive concept to define. There are thought to be enough definitions of healthy personality to fill a small book. Jahoda (1958), however, observed that "positive mental health" includes one or more of the following six aspects of individuals: 1. The degree of personal integration achieved by the individual. 2. The degree of autonomy achieved by the person. 3. The adequacy of the person's perception of reality. 4. The degree of environmental mastery achieved by the person. 5. The attitudes shown by a person toward his or her own self. 6. The style and degree of a person's self-actualization. Schultz (1977) assessed components of healthy personality and stated the following characteristics to be agreed upon by most theorists: 1. Capability to consciously and rationally direct one's behavior. 2. Being in charge of one's own destiny. 3. Knowing who and what one is and being accepting of strengths and weaknesses. 4. Being firmly anchored in the present. 5. Pursuit of challenge through new goals and new experiences.

As can be seen, any single definition of healthy personality will be inadequate to some degree, yet it will be beneficial to have a working model, hence,  the formulation by Jourard (1963) will be used: Healthy personality is manifested by individuals who have been able to gratify their basic needs through acceptable behavior such that their own personality is no longer a problem to their self. They can take their self more or less for granted and devote energies and thoughts to socially meaningful interests and problems beyond security, or lovability, or status.

This course investigates those conceptions of healthy personality offered by Gordon Allport, Carl Rogers, Erich Fromm, Abraham Maslow, Carl Jung, Viktor Frankl, and Fritz Perls. These theories are selected because they are fully developed and are contemporary in their appeal. Each describes a level of personality development which is beyond normality leading to healthy personality. The health of personality is considered important for happiness, peace of mind, personal adjustment, and success in living. To examine ways of becoming what we are capable of being is a worthwhile venture as  (1967) stated by the following: "If you deliberately plan to be less than you are capable of being, then I warn you that you'll be unhappy for the rest of your life."...Read full story

The Importance of a Healthy Lifestyle

What is a healthy lifestyle? Many of us are actually oblivious to the phrase ‘a healthy lifestyle’. A healthy lifestyle would include physical health and psychological health which can be attained through exercising, good eating habits and to avoid drinking and smoking.

One way of having good health is to have a strong body. Fitness is a way of prolonging good health. Being athletics is always a god sign of a fit person. This, however, does not mean that only footballers, basketball players and sports fanatics are the only ones that are fit. Even couch potatoes can be fit simply by doing exercises like jogging, swimming, cycling and walking.

Good health also means a good diet and good eating habits. One must not indulge in food like bees to honey. Be selective but not too choosy on the type of food you eat. Take less oily food for oil will generate fat. Too much fat will clog up your blood capillaries and then a multitude of illnesses like high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke can follow. Now, the next time you decide to go for supper late at night you might want to think twice. This does not mean that there should be no more cakes of fish head curry and other mouth watering food. It just means compromise. If you are going to have a lot of  oil and calories for lunch, have some salad for dinner then.

Avoid bad habits like drinking too much or smoking. Smoking is not only unhealthy but unhygienic. A smoker smells and his breath stinks. Besides yellow teeth full of plaque are not attractive at all. Too much drinking is also not good for health and it destroys the liver.

So, my point in all this is, to have a healthy lifestyle there needs to be balance in whatever you do. Too much and too little of one thing can be bad. Good health is acquired through exercises, a healthy diet and stay away from alcohol and cigarettes. Practicing good health is apt to the age-old adage ‘Health is Wealth”
